This gruesome tale has me completely captivated from the very beginning. I rarely read books written from an antihero’s perspective, so this was a refreshing change of pace for me. As a long time fan of mysteries and police procedural books, I didn’t know whether this would live up to my expectations. I’m pleased to report that it far exceeded them! The characters were rich and complex, the language vivid and colorful, the story intriguing. I liked the way the story was partially told from a series of flashbacks. It added an element of interest to the story. Marie was a strong female character. It was interesting that my initial perspective of her was much the same as Detective Duncan’s but by the end of the story I felt like I knew her as a complex character, neither good nor evil but just unashamedly human.
This was was an excellent debut mystery novel. I highly recommend this. Trigger warning: The only thing to watch out for is grisly violence and explicit sexual abuse, some mild cursing.
